UST International Studies Students Visit Taiwan
1/18/2011
University of St. Thomas students spent the first two weeks of 2011 in Taiwan as part of a course on contemporary Taiwanese history and politics. Led by Center for International Studies Director Dr. Hans Stockton, the delegation traveled to Taipei, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. This was the third such group study abroad to Taiwan.

Students who studied in Taiwan were Rachel Aoughsten, Samrat Bhattacharya, Thomas Beavers, Jeffrey Benjamin Coburn, John halliburton, Dominic Kisielewski, Sharon Medina, Kevin Miller, Nadeen Mustafa, Mahrukh Syed Nasir, John Paul Powelson, Lisa Soto and Austin Stanfill.

While in Taipei, the group was hosted by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and visited various government ministries, political parties, cultural sites and museums. Jackson Chang of Houston provided the students with unique access to Da Ai Television of the Tzu Chi Foundation. In Tainan, the delegation was hosted by Chia Nan University of Pharmacy & Science and even enjoyed a special visit with the university’s chairman, Dr. Wang. In Kaohsiung, the group was hosted by the International Programs Office of Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages.

The students experienced the sights, sounds, and warm people of Taiwan that make the island a very special experience. Each student has returned to Houston with a better understanding of the complex history of Taiwan; relations between Taipei, Beijing, and Washington D.C.; and a strong desire to return to Taiwan as soon as possible. The study abroad trip to Taiwan once again received generous support from Don Wang of MetroBank. Three students received scholarships from the Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission (OCAC), thanks to Deputy Ministry Ren Hong.

“These trips call for a lot of planning and preparation, and I could not have provided my students with such a life-shaping experience without the kind help provided by our community friends and the Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Joseph Chen, and Director Edward Chen,” Stockton said.

While in Taipei, Stockton also spoke with government and university officials about plans to bring a large group of Taiwan students to the University this summer for a two week workshop on Global and American Studies. Dr. Stockton looks forward to reciprocating the red carpet treatment for future visitors from Taiwan.
