UST Model United Nations Team to Compete in National Competition
2/9/2011
Eight students from the University of St. Thomas Model United Nations (UST MUN) team will compete in the Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) conference at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, from Thursday, February 17-Sunday, Feb. 20. The students will debate topics ranging from disarmament and international security to trade and global health. Simulating United Nations meetings, the students will represent the governments of Sierra Leone and Yemen.

Preparation for the conference began as early as October of 2010, when the students completed weeks of training on how to effectively represent their assigned countries. All of the training culminates during the conference in a simulation of the proceedings of the United Nations. The students gain diplomacy and negotiation skills; enhance their writing and research methods; and learn about the intricate workings of the world's forum while learning to moderate peace and security for the world.

Although primarily an opportunity to gain skills and learn about how to handle critical political and social situations, Model UN competitions acknowledge outstanding performances by the individual delegate and the best team. UST MUN is currently in its second year and has already tasted success. Out of the four delegates who went to the Houston International Model United Nations last year, current Secretary-General, Dehua Lea brought home the Best Delegate Award for his performance as the People's Republic of China in the Human Rights Council. This year, the team hopes to repeat the success, not only individually, but also bring home the gold for the University.
