Lady Celts Finish 2-2 at Southwestern Tournament
10/31/2011

Evon WelchThe Lady Celts Volleyball Team finished a tough three-day stretch with a 2-3 record.  On Friday and Saturday, the Celts traveled to Southwestern for their annual Halloween Tournament to face Concordia, East Texas Baptist, University of Texas-Dallas and No. 7 ranked Southwestern.

First up for the Lady Celts was Concordia.  The Lady Celts jumped out to a quick start and never looked back with a convincing three-set victory: 25-19, 27-25 and 25-22.  Regina Trapp led the Lady Celts with 20 kills and 12 digs, while setter Brittany Weiler dished out 39 assists.

Next, the Lady Celts took on a scrappy East Texas Baptist squad that pushed UST to four sets. In the end, the Lady Celts had too much fire power for East Texas Baptist, winning the match 25-17, 24-26, 25-14 and 25-14.  Stephanie Biediger led the way with 17 kills, followed by two other Lady Celts with double digit kills: Trapp with 14 and Evon Welch with 10.

Saturday was a different story for the Lady Celts.  A slow start was the team’s down fall against UT-Dallas in a three-set lose 23-25, 20-25 and 15-25.  Welch led the Lady Celts with 10 kills, and Brittany Downs had 15 digs.

Next up was No. 7 ranked Southwestern on their senior day.  In front of a large and loud crowd, the Lady Celts battled but could not pull out from the four-set loss.  Trapp led the attack with 22 kills. Biediger and Welch also posted double-digit kills, with 11 and 10 respectively.  Downs led the defense with 25 digs.  The Lady Celts finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark.

On Sunday, the team returned home to face conference foe Wiley College, who is receiving votes for the Top 25.  The Lady Celts knew they were going to have to play a strong defensive match to pull off the upset. The Lady Celts came out on fire with a chance to win the first set but could not make the plays down the stretch.  In the end, UST’s offense could not find a rhythm and lost a tough three-set match: 22-25, 20-25 and 15-25.

The Lady Celts are now 4-4 in their inaugural year in the Red River Conference and 17-15 overall with 2 regular season matches to go.
