Stockton Lectures at Taiwan’s Wenzao Ursuline College
11/18/2011
Image: Hans Stockton With GroupDr. Hans Stockton, director and chair of the University of St. Thomas Center for International Studies, traveled to Kaohsiung, Taiwan from Oct. 31 – Nov. 5 as the ICUSTA exchange lecturer to Wenzao Ursuline College of Foreign Languages.  Stockton was received by the Department of International Affairs’ chair, Dr. YuJane Chen, and her faculty colleagues.

In an effort to deepen collaborative efforts between ICUSTA members, faculty exchanges allow visiting faculty to meet counterparts abroad, present lectures on research and attend or teach in foreign classrooms.  Founded by the Ursuline Sisters in 1966, Wenzao is acknowledged as one of Taiwan’s top language and teacher preparation colleges and hosts one of the few interdisciplinary programs in international affairs in the country.

“The ICUSTA exchange was an invaluable opportunity to renew old acquaintances and make new friends,” Stockton said.  “The opportunity to teach in a Taiwan classroom was also a great opportunity to stretch the ol’ pedagogical muscles and be immersed in a different learning environment.  This has helped me reflect on what and how I teach here at home.”

During his time at Wenzao, Stockton visited with international affairs, communication arts and foreign languages faculty to discuss the management and administration of university degree programs and departments under Taiwan’s educational system, the pedagogy and learning styles of students, student exchange and areas of possible collaboration between UST and Wenzao.  He provided guest lectures to undergraduate students in non-governmental organizations and international relations, and presented his research on Taiwan’s elections and electoral reform to interested faculty.

During a brief stay in Taipei, Stockton visited with officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss matters related to the US-Taiwan relationship, as well as encourage the Ministry diplomats posted in Houston to consider graduate work at UST.  He also visited ministry level offices of the Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission to discuss ways the University might serve the Taiwanese-American community in Houston.

In the spring, UST will receive Dr. Kit Lam, chair of Wenzao’s Graduate Institute of Creative Arts Industries and of the Department of Communication Arts.
