Enroll in UST Music Composition Summer Camp
5/14/2012
Need something musically stimulating this summer? Sign up for the week-long Music Composition Camp. The camp is 9 a.m. to noon daily on June 4-8 in Cullen Hall on the University of St. Thomas campus.
Although the camp attracts advanced and intermediate students, beginners with private-lesson experience are encouraged to take their turn at composing and notation. Campers need a pencil but staff paper is provided.
The camp includes instruction for all levels and classical styles of composition ranging from baroque to contemporary. Instruction is geared toward nurturing musical ideas and demonstrating notation software to help musical development. Campers will also explore 20th Century classical and film composers, their ideas and influences on their music.
Instructing the campers are UST faculty members Dr. Malcolm Rector, assistant professor of music, and David Benitez, guitar instructor.
Rector is an accomplished composer, pianist, writer, director and independent filmmaker. He has scored a number of short films, feature films and movie trailers. Rector has also produced, directed, edited, composed and arranged the music for three music videos.
Benitez is a talented drummer, trumpet and guitar player. He has worked to form a church choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Rosenberg, Texas, and plays with the missionary music ministry Shaddai.
The camp costs $150 per person with a $25 deposit due by May 15. The balance is due the first day of camp.
Find the application online on the MPS webpage. Submit the form and payment to the mailing address noted on the form.
