UST Liberal Arts Mom Goes for Her Goals
5/21/2012

Photo: Dinorah FloresDinorah Flores, an international student in the Master in Liberal Arts program at the University of St. Thomas, thought getting her degree in art history would be just a new experience. Much to her surprise, she exceeded her goals and became an inspiration, in education and faith, to her children.

“Getting my master’s began as a personal goal I wanted to achieve,” Flores said. “I also wanted to perfect my English and invest my time wisely. I quickly realized there was much more to learn. I learned to be organized, manage my time and how to research.”

Originally from Mexico City, Flores has been in the United States for about 10 years. She learned about the MLA program through her son Eric. Flores has three children, all attending faith-based universities and pursuing challenging fields of study such as medical school, mechanical and biomedical engineering.

“It was a great example for my kids that I am able to finish my degree and achieve my goals,” Flores said. “They respect me for that and are proud of me like I am proud of them.”

In Mexico, Flores finished her undergraduate degree one year before moving to the United States. Parental obligations kept her busy, but Flores decided to juggle earning a master’s at UST and raising a family.

“The program can accommodate your life,” Flores said. “If you work or have kids, you can make it work. It has very flexible hours and class times. Don’t rush to finish the program either. Just manage your time. You will learn these things and you can do it.”

Flores finished her MLA degree in December 2011 and attributes her success to UST.

“Everything I’ve learned from my professors has been very valuable to me,” Flores said. “I’ve learned a lot from them and as a non-traditional student, their focus on my success has been invaluable.”

The MLA program has a proven record of success. The program began in 1988 and student enrollment exceeds 200 with more than 600 graduates. The 36-credit hour program enables students to tailor coursework to fit their interests and goals. Students choose from approximately 125 classes per semester in 21 different concentrations. Many MLA students have full-time jobs and are able to complete the degree on a part-time basis.

The MLA program offers students choice, freedom and flexibility. Learn more about the MLA program and hear the stories of current students by viewing the MLA Program video.
