Coleman Earns Award for Nursing Leadership
7/10/2012

Photo Dr. Ann ColemanThe re-emergence of the University of St. Thomas School of Nursing was a campus team effort. Dr. Ann Coleman, a gold medal winner of the 2012 Excellence in Nursing Awards, attributes her award to the hard work and cooperation of the team that brought the School of Nursing back to life.

Nominated by School of Nursing Dean, Poldi Tschirch, Coleman, an assistant professor in nursing, received her gold medal in the Nursing Administration and Leadership Category on behalf of the Good Samaritan Foundation. GSF had more than 100 nominations in Texas and created the awards to recognize nursing's "best and brightest."

"This is a well deserved recognition and exciting news for the UST School of Nursing as well as Dr. Coleman," Tschirch said.

GSF, established in 1951, is a fund raising and grant-making organization dedicated solely to Texas nursing. Its mission is to increase the quantity of nurses dedicated to clinical care and to improve the quality of nurse education and training. GSF's board is comprised of a diverse group of leaders in Texas business, healthcare and philanthropy.

Coleman began her work as the Nursing Activity Director, as a part of the U.S. Department of Education Title V Grant, in February 2011. The grant, received in October 2010, supports the facilities, curriculum and equipment development of the School of Nursing.

Tschirch commended Coleman for her expertise in clinical simulation lab, faculty development and project management. In her nomination letter to the Foundation, Tschirch gives details about Coleman's many accolades:

"In less than 15 months, she has led a remarkable effort to develop a Nursing Success Center for specialized nursing student academic support, developed a Nursing Simulation Center, established a framework for instructional support and technology integration in nursing courses, and has developed strategic plans for technology integration in nursing curriculum and faculty development."

Even though her many accomplishments prove her worthiness for the gold medal, Coleman is humbled by the award.

"I think it means more for the University than for me personally," Coleman said. "It says a lot about how we have joined together as a team to establish a nursing program. The award is an outward sign to show that we are committed to working together to give our students what they need."

Coleman's team was able to give the students a brand-new Nursing Simulation Lab fully equipped with patient beds, cutting-edge technology and a variety of teaching tools for students.

"It is our foundational, hands-on classroom that creates a bridge between theory and clinical practice," Coleman said. "It will shape what students learn and how they learn. They get to experience providing patient care in a safe environment before working on live patients."

"What it takes to pull this program together exemplifies the mission of St. Thomas, to educate leaders in faith and character. It takes the leaders on campus working together to get this program started. We would not have our building on this campus without Information Technology and Facilities Operations working with us."

As a part of her award, Coleman will be the star of a tribute video produced by the Foundation. The video will be released in September at an awards luncheon. Coleman, Tschirch and Debbye Crofoot-Morley, director of development, will be featured in the video.
