Get Ready, Already for Safety Week on Campus

Photo: SafetyStudents, faculty and staff can learn emergency preparedness tips, make a hurricane kit and participate in a campus-wide scavenger hunt during Safety Week on Sept. 24-28. The Office of Student Affairs is organizing Safety Week as part of a coordinated emergency management initiative to promote emergency preparedness on campus.

Safety Week includes: 

  • Sept. 25 - Houston Police Department Speaker
    12:30-2 p.m.
    Scanlan Room, Jerabeck
    Stephen Daniel, senior community liaison officer at the Houston Police Department, will present about surviving an active shooter situation.

  • Sept. 26 - Safety Walk
    8-10 p.m.
    Crooker Patio
    There will be a Safety Walk around campus to identify potential safety hazards. Participants will receive a multi-use flashlight. The walk will conclude at Guinan Hall as part of the Wonderful Wednesday event. Refreshments will be served.

  • Sept. 27 - Weather Safety Day
    12:30-2 p.m.
    Scanlan Room, Jerabeck
    Frank Billingsley, chief meteorologist for KPRC Local 2, will speak on Houston weather and preparation. In addition, participants will receive supplies to start their own hurricane kits. Food will be available.

  • Sept. 28 - Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Course
    This is a chance to be certified in CPR, AED & First Aid by the Red Cross. The certification is valid for 2 years. There are some spots that are available free of charge due to a federal grant. Please contact Jessica Domann for details.
    $30 per person/Free

    Safety Week will coincide with National Preparedness Month, National Campus Fire Safety Month and National Campus Safety Awareness Month. All events are free and open to UST students, faculty and staff.
