After final exams and before heading into Christmas Break, the University of St. Thomas women’s basketball team
hit the road for two Red River Athletic Conference games on Dec. 15.
The trip began in Fort Worth, Texas, for a game against Texas Wesleyan University. The Celts started strong and took a 38-37 lead into the half. A slow start to the second half proved hazardous as the Celts fell 76-64. Amber Arceneaux-Francis
led the team with 20 points and 18 rebounds. Her’shiira Boone-Rodgers
added 20 points, and Maghen Lormand chipped in 11.
“I thought we did a nice job of bouncing back from the Wiley game in terms of our effort,” Head Coach Mike Ricks
said. “We didn’t score the ball for the first few minutes of the second half, and we kind of dug ourselves a hole.”
The road test continued with a game in Hobbs, N.M., to take on the University of the Southwest. The Celts took control of the game early jumping out to a 17-4 lead and cruising to an 80-68 victory. Lormand had 22 points and 16 rebounds, and Arceneaux-Francis led the victory with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
“It was good to get a win heading into the break,” Ricks said. “I think we played well in stretches, but we kind of let them chip away at our lead a couple of times. One of the things we have to work on is not taking our foot off the gas when we have a lead.”
With the win, the Celts move to 5-7 on the season and 3-3 in RRAC play. Ricks knows his team has more work to do if they want to earn a spot in the conference tournament in Waxahachie, Texas.
“Last year we learned how good you have to be in January and February if you want to achieve your goals,” he said. “We are committed to doing things the right way, and we believe we will take what we learned last year, as well as what we’ve learned so far this year, and have a great second semester.”
The Celts will hit the court again at 5:30 p.m. in a Jan. 3 home game against Northwood University. Also, the game will be broadcast live on Premier Sports Network
