Accounting Speakers Inspire Students
12/20/2012

Anita SunLearning leadership skills and creating comradery among friends, nine University of St. Thomas student leaders attended the Institute of Management Accountant’s 13th Annual Student Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas. About 500 students attended the conference from more than 90 universities and 34 states.

Students learned about practical, timely topics such as international financial reporting standards, ethics and the value of the certified management accountant certification. They also gained valuable leadership and career-building skills.

A recent graduate of the Master of Science in Accounting program at UST, Anita Sun said her favorite part of the conference was the information sessions.

“We all had very interesting topics, which was very helpful to me in seeking job opportunities and preparing for my certified public accountant exam,” Sun said. “Also, we made many new friends and exchanged information to get news from others.”

Bryant Ambelang, CEO and president of NatureSweet Tomatoes, delivered an inspiring talk titled “Being the Groundbreaker.” Also making keynote addresses were Mike Eklund, vice president of finance for Dell, Inc., who spoke about “PC Nation: Leading the Charge,” and Phil Willingham, district president of professional staffing services at Robert Half International, offered insights about “Business Etiquette: The New Rules in a Digital Age.”

Carol Sullivan, visiting professor in the Cameron School of Business, said the experience was filled with both learning and fun.

“The opportunity to attend the IMA Student Leadership Conference enhances these campus leaders’ education by giving them great opportunities to meet leaders in the corporate community, learn from their successes and even interview for jobs,” Sullivan said. “It also gave the students a chance to strengthen their collegial relationships by experiencing a road trip to San Antonio together in the UST van.”

Sun, who has lived in Houston for a year and a half and is originally from Shanghai, China, was president of the Graduate Association for Accounting Professionals. She was recently offered an internship at MFR - Doeren Mayhew, one of the top 15 public accounting firms in Houston. The three-month internship is expected to lead to a full-time job offer in April 2013.
