Sister Mary FaubertSister Marie Faubert, CSJ, EdD, PSC, LPC-S, NCC is professor and director of the On-Campus Counselor Education Program in UST's School of Education.

Could you please share with us the role ethics plays in your teaching and research?

Professional counselors are alone with people. They work with vulnerable people. Their profession requires optimal integrity. The ethical codes and legal requirements are essential components of that optimal integrity. Therefore, there is a specific course which addresses legal and ethical issues in addition to the inclusion of these issues in all counselor education courses.

What classes do you teach that include ethics?

I teach COUN 5369 Professional Counseling Issues and Ethics. The course is taught to masters level Counselor Education Program  students in the clinical mental health track. This course includes the principles, assumptions, techniques, and procedures associated with professional counseling issues and ethics. Knowledge, abilities, and skills for applying legal and ethical issues in counseling settings are developed. The central place of integrity in the life of a professional counselor is emphasized, Students become familiar with salient professional organizations.

The course investigates research related to the application of professional counseling to legal and ethical issues. Salient legal cases are examined. The course emphasizes how professional codes of ethics are applied with cultural confidence and competence especially in working with clients whose first language is not English. In addition to language issues, the course probes ethical issues regarding race, ethnicity, class, gender, and distinctive populations as they impact ethical considerations of power relationships. The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics and the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors Code of Ethics are mastered.

In addition, Sister Faubert has given ethics workshops for various counseling associations given the recognition of her expertise in the field of counseling education.
