The Alchemy of Outreach
5/9/2007 The UST American Chemical Society Student Affiliates recently participated in three outreach projects, three Saturdays in a row, which educated children in science. Students volunteered at the Education Rainbow Challenge at Worthing High School, Super Science Saturday at Helms Community Learning Center, and Earth Day at the Children’s Museum.
“The ACS Student Affiliates have done an outstanding job of community outreach this year,” said UST Student Affiliates faculty advisor, Tom Malloy. “The crowning glory was at the Education Rainbow Challenge. Out of approximately 100 volunteers from the Local ACS section, University of Houston and Texas Southern Student Affiliates and others, 65 were UST students. I was exceedingly proud of our students turning out, especially on a Saturday morning.”
The Education Rainbow Challenge group organizes individual and team math contests for inner city elementary and middle school students twice a year. This is done in conjunction with HISD and support from local businesses, which give substantial prizes to the teachers and the winning schools. The Greater Houston American Chemical Society Section has become involved and through it, our Student Affiliates, to put on science demonstrations to engage the children and their families during breaks in the contests. This year the Student Affiliates staged demonstrations for more than 600 children. ACS students pictured above right, from left to right are Vania Phouc, Sarah Hupy and Megan Nunes.
Super Science Saturday is an ongoing event primarily organized by Dr. Rick Krustchinsky in the UST School of Education and the faculty at Helms Elementary. The Student Affilates have planned science demonstrations for children at this event for four years.
ACS Student Affilates also participated in events on Earth Day at the Children's Museum in Houston that educated children about environmental concerns. Pictured from left to right are Megan Nunes and Vania Phuoc.
