The second annual Fulbright Reception, hosted by the Houston/Southeast Texas Chapter of the Fulbright Association, was held at UST on Sept. 20 to welcome Houston area recipients of Fulbright grants and provide visiting Fulbrighters with information and contacts with Houston business, university and professional organizations.
Fulbright grants are awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals of various countries to engage in many types of educational activities. Several UST faculty members, including John Knasas (Lithuania), John Deely, Bernard Bonario (Italy), Charles Davis (Guatemala), Charlene Dykman (Panama), Linda Pett-Conklin and Deborah Salvo have been awarded Fulbright grants to research, study and lecture in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

“The reception offered the University an opportunity to showcase our faculty and programs,” said Dr. Charlene Dykman, professor of Management and Marketing. Approximately 100 individuals from Houston’s international community attended, as well as representatives from the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research, Texas Medical Center, Houston Greeters, the U.S. State Department, Houston Sister Cities, Asia Society and the Houston Protocol Alliance.
Called the U.S. government’s flagship program in international exchange, the Fulbright program was proposed by Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas as a vehicle for promoting mutual understanding between people of the United States and people of other countries in the aftermath of WWII. It was signed into law by President Truman in 1946.
