Political Science Chair Lectures in China
11/6/2007
Dr. Jon Taylor visits ChinaUniversity of St. Thomas Political Science Chair and Associate Professor Jon Taylor recently visited the People’s Republic of China to present a paper on Texas Governor Rick Perry’s Emerging Technology Fund. The presentation, titled “Universities as Engines of Economic Development: The Texas Emerging Technology Fund,” was given at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

In 2005, the Texas governor secured $200 million to help the state attract growth in high-tech fields like biomedicine and nanotechnology. The new Emerging Technology fund will assist Texas in attracting the world’s best scientists and researchers to the state’s universities, attract thousands of high-tech jobs and help companies get their invention out of the lab and into the hands of consumers.

In addition to presenting the paper, Taylor gave a guest lecture to the school’s graduate students, as well as two separate “salon” Q&A sessions in both Chengdu and Jiuzhaiguo.

“Each session lasted more than two hours,” Taylor said. “Topics ranging from Marxism, Mao, President George Bush and even Britney Spears were covered.”

Taylor’s visit also took him to Beijing, where he visited with political science professors from China, Taiwan and Korea. They were visiting the Beijing Normal University for a roundtable discussion about public administration and how they could collaborate and assist each other.

While in Beijing, Taylor was able to visit both the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.
