UST Students Bring Holiday Cheer to Soldiers
12/10/2007
The holiday season will be a little brighter for our nation’s men and women stationed in Iraq this year, thanks to the brainchild of two University of St. Thomas students.
UST senior Mary Ann Shaw and her roommate junior Belma Trevizo collected donations from students, faculty and staff to send 50 of our troops Christmas care packages.
“I have a brother who is serving in the Marines,” said Shaw. “I thought about all the other men and women, like him, who are serving our country. I just really want them to know they are appreciated.”
In the span of one week, Shaw and Trevizo were able to come up with the idea, get the support of various campus organizations, collect donations from students and staff, as well as shop for and mail the care packages off to Iraq.
“There are some people in the military who don’t get care packages of any kind from their families,” said Trevizo. “This year it feels good to know we are changing that.”
The two students were able to drum up support from UST Campus Ministry, the Office of Volunteer Opportunities, the Office of Student Affairs, UST Health and Wellness, Resident Life and UST Security. The United Postal Service even donated boxes for the care packages, as well as gave a discount on shipping costs. The boxes were stuffed with food items, playing cards, eye drops and Christmas items.
