Green and Chaumont Celebrate Mardi Gras as King and Queen
2/11/2008 UST seniors Grover Green and Meris Chaumont received the royal treatment as this year’s student king and queen at the 2008 Mardi Gras Gala on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The event was held to raise money for the Fr. Frances E. Monaghan Scholarship Fund, which enables current and future UST students to benefit from a values-based education.
Wearing capes and crowns, Green and Chaumont greeted attendees and later gave speeches thanking donors for making a St. Thomas education possible for themselves and others.
Green and Chaumont were each nominated by either a student, faculty or staff member. Those who nominate a student must submit a short essay explaining why the person should be considered for king or queen and how that person is a leader of faith and character.
During an interview conducted by a panel of judges to determine the next royal couple, Chaumont spoke about her love of the University and her desire to give back through service, as well as her Cajun background. Chaumont, who received the Fr. Francis E. Monaghan Scholarship, will graduate in May 2008 with a degree in theology.
Green also received the Monaghan scholarship among many others, including the St. Thomas Aquinas Scholarship, the Donne Di Domani Scholarship, the Norma and Joseph McFadden Scholarship and the Crow Family Scholarship. A history and theology major, Green said the multiple financial awards he received made a UST education possible.
