Dr. Houser's Book Receives International Recognition
2/22/2008 Professor of Philosophy for UST’s Center for Thomistic Studies Dr. Ed Houser has received international recognition for his book “Laudemus Viros Gloriosos: Essays in Honor of Armand Maurer, CSB.” The volume, for which Dr. Houser edited and contributed essays, was composed in honor of Armand Maurer, CSB, of the Pontifical Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto.
In an article published for the University of Notre Dame’s Philosophy Department, Alexander Fidora of Spain’s Universitat Autonòma de Barcelona called Houser’s introduction “both a well-done presentation of Maurer’s work and a sound introduction to the collection of essays…” Commenting on one of Houser’s essays, Fidora wrote “Houser revisits the real distinction between essence and existence in Avicenna and Aquinas…(and) does so in a new and convincing way, placing the question in the larger context of how metaphysics arrives at its principles.”
Fidora also noted that the book “offers a wide range of extremely inspiring essays which reflect many of Maurer’s interests and much of his work,” and wrote that “this volume is indeed a manifest proof that Maurer’s important work is being continued by his pupils and friends.”
The volume was published in 2007 by the University of Notre Dame Press as part of the publications program for UST’s Center for Thomistic Studies. Its contributing authors, which include Director for the Center and Professor and Chair of Philosophy Dr. Mary Catherine Sommers, are friends, colleagues and students of Fr. Maurer.
