ICUSTA Offers UST Students and Faculty International Opportunities
2/25/2008
As a member of the International Council of Universities of St. Thomas Aquinas, UST has committed itself to expanding international experiences for students and faculty.
Through his work as executive director of ICUSTA, UST President Emeritus Dr. Joseph McFadden has worked to open up many opportunities for UST and for the students and faculties of other member universities. Francisco Del Canto and Crispulo Marmolejo

UST participates in a faculty lecture exchange program with fellow ICUSTA members, the University of Santo Tomas in Santiago, Chile and St. Thomas University in Fredricton, New Brunswick, Canada. Several UST professors have delivered lectures through this program. Professor of Political Science Dr. John Burke, Professor of Philosophy Dr. John Deely and Assistant Professor of English Dr. Shannon Forbes have traveled to the University of Fredricton as part of this exchange program. Dr. Gustavo Wensjoe, professor of international studies, has lectured at UST Chile and at Universidad Fraternidad de Agrupacrones Santo Tomás de Aquino (FASTA) in Argentina. Dr. Pierre Canac, associate professor of economics and finance, Dr. Higinia Torres-Rimbau, professor of dual language education and Dr. Burke have also lectured at UST Chile. Dr. Wensjoe will present a lecture on world governance at France’s Institut Catholique d’Etudes Superieures in March.

In addition to the lecture exchange program, UST Houston has hosted visiting scholars from member universities and has acted as host in offering an online course on globalization to students from all participating universities. In the fall of 2007, 140 students and faculty members from universities in nine different countries participated in the course.

This spring, Francisco Del Canto traveled to UST from Universidad FASTA as a visiting scholar. During his six-week-long stay, he has been working with Dr. Canac and other professors from UST and various ICUSTA universities on composing a book that draws on the online course. As coordinator of the study abroad program at Universidad FASTA, Del Canto also collaborates with UST in organizing study abroad trips to the Argentinean university.

Crispulo Marmolejo, a professor in law and economics and director of the University of Santo Tomas’ law school at the Vina del Mar campus in Chile, is completing his MLA in international studies at UST while on sabbatical. In 2006, Marmolejo came to UST to lecture. During his visit here he hopes to further strengthen the relationship between UST Chile and UST Houston.

ICUSTA was established in 1993 to promote academic exchange between students and faculties of universities inspired by the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. The worldwide council is currently comprised of 27 universities, representing Catholic institutions from every inhabited continent in the world.
