MBA Student Research to be Published in Management Journal
5/14/2008
Yvette Mitchell, a University of St. Thomas student pursuing a Master of Business Administration, presented a paper on Benefits of Automating Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans at the Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) conference in Arlington, Virginia on April 5, 2008. Mitchell’s paper will be published in the Society for Advancement Business Journal. Cameron School of Business Dean Bahman Mirshab presented Mitchell with a certificate of achievement and a cash award in recognition of her work.. The Cameron School of Business was a sponsor of this conference, and UST’s Research Committee also supported Mitchell’s attendance at the conference.
Mitchell began her research for the paper as a requirement for the Management Information Systems class in the fall of 2007. In her paper, she integrated her work experience with an organization which provides business continuity and disaster recovery automation services.
“Student participation at conferences provides the students with an opportunity to present their work to a diverse group of practitioners and academics and receive valuable feedback,” said Dr. Beena George, assistant professor of management and marketing.” When they attend the conference, UST students are surprised to find that they are among a handful of non-doctoral students presenting, and a successful conference presentation adds to their sense of achievement.”
Mitchell said the experience was a positive career-enhancing and learning opportunity.
“Being an MBA student at the University of St. Thomas was the best career choice I have made so far. It gave me the opportunity to turn a simple term paper into a full research topic with the encouragement and assistance from the school and my employer, which led to my participation and attendance to the annual SAM National Conference,” Mitchell said. “It helped me learn and understand my job better and gave me direction in solidifying my career goals and objectives. It also gives me credibility in the industry by getting my research published in the SAM Business Journal.”
