Dr. Lisa Mundey to Publish Essays About U.S. Military in Afghanistan
7/23/2008
Dr. Lisa Mundey, Assistant Professor of HistoryDr. Lisa Mundey, assistant professor of history, is writing a series of three essays to be published in ABC-Clio’s Military History Series, The Encyclopedia of Middle East Wars: A Social, Political, and Military History. The encyclopedia is expected to be forthcoming in 2009.

The encyclopedia seeks to document and contextualize the United States’ participation in contemporary Middle East Wars (1991 Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan War, Iraq War and the War on Terror). Essays for the encyclopedia’s print version will also be used for company Web sites, workbooks, and handbooks for students and academics alike.

Mundey wrote essays on Lieutenant General David W. Barno, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan from October 2003-May 2005; Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan, the highest U.S. headquarters in Afghanistan from October 2003-February 2007; and Provincial Reconstruction Teams, civil-military teams of about 80 personnel who sponsor reconstruction projects and assist local and provincial government, among other efforts.

In addition, she has also agreed to write on the International Security Assistance Force, the Coalition headquarters in Afghanistan run by NATO that now commands all combat operations in Afghanistan; Task Force Phoenix, the U.S.-led Coalition task force charged with training the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police; and Combined Joint Task Force-180 (currently CJTF-101) the current highest U.S. military headquarters in Afghanistan, in charge of operations in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces along the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Before coming to UST, Mundey served as a historian for the U.S. Army Center of Military History (CMH). While at the CMH, Mundey researched and wrote a manuscript on the U.S. Army’s experience in Afghanistan from March 2002 to May 2005. Her experience at CMH and her expertise on Afghanistan earned her a position on the encyclopedia’s editorial advisory board.

“It is important to note that the war in Iraq receives vastly more attention from the media and from scholars than does the war in Afghanistan.,” Mundey said. “There are very few published scholarly works on the Afghan war, and even fewer that give basic information about who, what, when, where, and how. The Middle East encyclopedia will help fill this gap.”
