Hittinger Speaks on "Seek the Welfare of the City"

 Dr. John Hittinger, UST Professor of Philosophy, participated in the “Seek the Welfare of the City: Effective Responses to Poverty & Human Need” conference held at Houston Baptist University in September.
With many Americans struggling in the face of financial hardship, broken families and violence in their neighborhoods, participants addressed what we as citizens can do in response to these needs, and how we can effectively answer the call to “seek the welfare of the city.”
The conference drew its inspiration from Bruce Winter’s book, “Seek the Welfare of the City: Christians as Benefactors and Citizens.” In his introduction, Winter writes that ‘seek the welfare of the city’ is borrowed from Jeremiah 29:7. The prophet instructed the exiled people of God to “seek the welfare of the city” in which they lived. Bruce Winter invites Christians as citizens to transform the role of benefactor as they seek the city’s welfare.
Conference topics included “Why Good Intentions Aren’t Good Enough” and “What Do Effective Solutions Look Like?”
Hittinger participated in the panel discussion “Who’s Responsible? Family, Church, and Business Overcoming Social Breakdown.” He spoke on “What Can Churches Do?” to respond effectively to needs in their community and beyond.
