UST Hosts Archdiocesan Essay Contest

Students, parents and teachers from 43 different Catholic schools in the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese will gather for the fifth annual UST/Archdiocesan Essay Contest Awards Ceremony on Friday, Jan. 30. This year’s essay theme is “Catholic Education Celebrates Service.” Students submitted essays reflecting on a school or parish service project which has had an impact on their lives, or about a person affiliated with their school whose life exemplifies a life of service. The contest is open to third-to 12th-grade students in the Archdiocese Catholic schools.

The 2,500 essays submitted to the contest were read by UST faculty, staff and friends on January 14. The contest is cosponsored by UST’s Catholic Outreach Office and the Office of the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

An awards ceremony will be held at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 where representatives from each of the participating schools, along with the persons about whom they wrote in their essays, are invited to come to campus for Mass followed by awards day activities.

Students who place 1st and/or 2nd in each of the three categories are invited to come to the stage (along with their honoree) to receive an award from the His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Superintendent Sister Kevina Keating and UST President Dr. Robert Ivany.

• 10 a.m. Mass, Chapel of St. Basil
• 11:15 a.m. Awards Ceremony, Jerabeck Center 
• 11:45 a.m. Luncheon, Jerabeck Center
