Malcolm Rector to Screen Video at Upcoming Film Festivals
1/28/2009
UST Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Malcolm Rector’s music video X-Man was selected for screening by the San Diego Black Film Festival and by the Canada International Film Festival. Rector, who directed, produced and edited the video also composed and performed the music on keyboard.
“X-Man is a story of an American soldier fighting in Iraq who watches neighborhoods become battlefields; witnesses the suffering of fellow soldiers; and observes increasingly advanced technological strikes while struggling to comprehend the reason behind the war and his role in it,” Rector said.
“Dr. Rector’s ability to express himself through his art has been a wonderful influence to young students in his music courses who are able to observe his talent firsthand,” said Tom Crow, chair of the Music Program. “We are honored to have such a valuable musician in our program and in our University community.”
Rector graduated from UST in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in music and subsequently earned a master’s degree and Ph.D from Rice University. He worked as an adjunct music professor at St. Thomas from 2002-2003. Rector returned to his alma mater in 2008 to teach jazz, music theory and composition. He replaced Tom Borling, longtime professor of Jazz Studies.
In addition to his academic work, he focuses his professional attention on music composition and filmmaking. He has been composing music for more than 20 years. In the summer of 2007, he produced, directed, edited, composed and arranged the music for a video called “Wack Attack (Crack Attack)” by Aida, which circulated on the film festival circuit. He also produced a short film entitled, “Fallen Diva,” 2008.
Thus far, Rector has written 17 full-length screenplays, nine stage plays, one novel and numerous short stories. The genres have varied from drama to surreal. Rector also won or has been a finalist in several national and international writing competitions that range from Sundance Film Festival to the Screenwriting Showcase Awards.
