3/26/2010

Anurag Gupta and Hiromi Oka were winners at the Houston level of the Texas Music Teacher's Association performance contest held at Houston Community College. Gupta won playing Rachmaninoff and Khachaturian in the 9-10th grade piano solo category and Oka won in 11-12th grade piano solo playing Chopin. They will compete on the state level at the Texas Music Teacher's Association convention in Dallas in June. James Jurica was also a competitor in the 9-10th grade category.

Ten minutes of memorized solo repertoire is a requirement of the contest.

Later that day, Pinyi Zhou, grade four, was piano soloist at the Chinese Embassy of Houston for their New Year's Gala.

These young musicians are some of the first pupils of the new Music Preparatory School and in the past attended the Annual Piano Camp hosted by the University of St. Thomas Music Department. They are students of Paul Krystofiak, adjunct professor of music at St. Thomas.

Building on the Music Department’s commitment to excellence in music education and community outreach, the University began offering private instruction to pre-college music students and non-traditional hobbyists by launching the Music Preparatory School in 2009. Music Preparatory private lessons are available to third to 12th grade students. Krystofiak serves as director. For more information, contact Krystofiak at 713-525-3566 or e-mail krystop@stthom.edu.
