International Studies Students Present at Regional Conference
4/9/2010
A group of 25 University of St. Thomas students majoring in international Studies and International Development presented their research at the 90th Annual Southwest Social Science Association meeting on April 3.
These presentations were part of the Southwest International Studies Association sections for undergraduate research, of which the Center for International Studies at UST has been a driving force. International Studies/Development majors are required to complete a two-semester senior thesis project.
“Presentation at the annual conference and the UST Research Symposium provide true capstones to their academic experience and preparation, and a taste of life at a professional conference,” said Dr. Hans Stockton , associate professor of international studies. “Not only are students required to undergo a rigorous research project, participation in conferences and symposia also provides important practice and experience presenting their research to other specialists in their fields. These are all essential skills in private and public life.”
For more than 10 years, UST participation in the undergraduate student research panels have become a mainstay at the annual SISA conference primarily due to the initiation of the late Dr. Gustavo Wensjoe, former director of the Center.
"We are proud to continue the tradition with our largest group of student participants to date," said Dr. Linda Pett-Conklin, acting director of the Center for International Studies.
The top student papers will now be submitted to a SISA committee for selection and publication in the Journal of the Southwest International Studies Association.
