UST Chemistry Department Receives ACS Accreditation
4/15/2010
The University of St. Thomas Chemistry Department has received accreditation from the American Chemical Society (ACS). Accreditation from ACS elevates the reputation and credibility of approved chemistry programs. Accreditation also attracts top high school student talent interested in studying chemistry, as well as attracting employers and graduate schools to those with degrees in chemistry.
“UST is well known in the local community, but this will gain great recognition for the University of St. Thomas Chemistry Department as a quality chemistry program throughout the country,” said Chemistry Chair Gerry Gries.
The American Chemical Society offers a network for chemical professionals that allows them to attend meetings, receive publications and financial benefits, and opportunities to connect with other professional chemists. Graduates with chemistry degrees from ACS accredited universities, now including the University of St. Thomas, are eligible to join the society after graduation. Students from non-ACS accredited universities must obtain three years of professional experience in a chemical field before they are eligible to join.
Approved departments are staffed by accomplished faculty, contain a modern and well-maintained infrastructure and provide a coherent chemistry curriculum. The accreditation procedure is quite rigorous, requires an application that provides detailed information about the institution and is thoroughly reviewed. After the committee is satisfied, the next step is a site-visit by a member a final review and then a decision. UST began the application procedure in June, 2006, was visited in May 2009 and received final approval this week.
“They set and enforce the standards, so this means that the University has met the standards,” said Gries.
