ACS Students Appear on Channel 11’s Great Day Houston
5/4/2010
UST American Chemical Society students and Chemistry Professor Dr. Tom Malloy appeared with the organizers of the Education Rainbow Challenge math contests on KHOU Channel 11’s Great Day Houston program on Friday, April 30. Show host Debra Duncan, who also served as the master of ceremonies for the Education Rainbow Challenge event (ERC), publicized the upcoming contest held May 1 at Attucks Middle School.
For more than 5 years, the UST American Chemical Society Chapter has provided volunteers to perform science demonstrations for the children and their families during breaks between individual and team math contests. More than 50 of the 65-70 science demonstration volunteers were UST students.
The Education Rainbow Challenge Inc is a nonprofit organization initiated by a group of Asian professionals in Houston to stimulate interest in the importance of mathematics by holding math contests for average students in the third through sixth grades. ERC has held semi-annual contests in conjunction with Houston Independent School District since the fall of 1998. The intent is to promote the mathematics skills of average students in inner city schools. "Average students" are students who are from low-income families, have TAAS (Texas Assessment of Academic Scores) less than 70, and are in early grades (grades 3-6).
