Senior Day Caps Winning Week for Lady Celts
10/25/2010
After three weeks on the road, the Lady Celts volleyball team returned back to Houston for three matches the week of Oct. 17. On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the Lady Celts traveled across town to play Division I foe Houston Baptist University. After a slow start to the match, the Lady Celts found their game but lost a hard-fought match in 4 sets 14-25, 14-25, 26-24, 20-25. Seniors Casey Mulryan and Mallory Wendel paced the Lady Celts attack.
“I was very proud of the way we kept fighting after the break," said Coach Trent Herman. "We made a few changes to the game plan and came out attacking them. Winning the third game gave us the confidence to stay in the match.”
On Wednesday, Oct. 20, the Lady Celts returned home to play Dallas Christian for its Dig Pink match to help raise money for breast cancer research. In front of a crowd dressed in pink, the Lady Celts made short work of their opponent. The Lady Celts won in 3 sets 25-7, 25-7, 25-7. The team hit an amazing .567 for the match with 45 kills on 67 swings with just 7 errors. The senior middles Casey Mulryan and Mallory Wendel led the Celts with 11 and 9 kills respectively.
“It was a great night for our team and our community to come out and play for such a great cause. We played focused and got the job done.” Herman said.
Saturday afternoon, the Lady Celts welcomed Southwest Assemblies of God for the Senior Day match on Parent’s weekend. In front of a large, vocal crowd, the Lady Celts won a hard fought 5 set match 21-25, 26-24, 25-15, 21-25, 15-11.
“That is the way you like to have your seniors play in their last home match of their career.” Herman said.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Poe returned to the Lady Celts starting line-up after being out with an injury for four weeks. Shaking off the rust, Poe hammered 18 kills and added 10 digs for another double-double to her impressive total for her four year career.
The other four seniors also played well in their final home match. Setter Sarah Curiel-Thompson led the Lady Celts with 35 assists. Setter/Rightside Hitter Courtney Johnson had 26 assists and 13 kills. Middle Blocker Mallory Wendel posted 9 kills for a .333 hitting percentage. Middle Blocker Casey Mulryan had 18 kills for a .410 hitting percentage.
“This class of players has built a strong foundation for St. Thomas Volleyball," Herman said of the five seniors. "It is going to be hard to replace a group like this, but they make it easier with the tradition they have set. I just wish I could have coached them for more then one year.”
