Campus Ministry Presents Program on Life of Beatified Teenager
10/27/2010
The University of St. Thomas Campus Ministry and the Focolare Movement will host a presentation about the Blessed Chiara Luce Badano, the 19-year-old Italian woman who was beatified on Sept. 25, 2010. The event will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6 in Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon.

Guests will hear Chiara’s inspiring story through testimonies from a group of young adults who attended the beatification ceremony. The presentation will be followed by a Mass at 5 p.m. in Cullen Hall.

Born in 1971, Chiara Luce Badano died in 1990 at nearly 19 years of age. An ardent supporter of the Focolare Movement, her biography describes a life lived in total devotion to God and abandonment to His will. Many witnesses have testified to the happiness she transmitted in spite of the pain of the bone cancer which took her life. She is the first member of the Catholic lay Focolare Movement to be beatified.

Archbishop Angelo Amato, head of the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints, described Chiara as a “modern, positive girl who transmits a message of optimism and hope.” He also said Chiara’s story serves as a reminder that “everyone has sufficient grace to become saints.”

The Focolare Movement, which means hearth, family fireside in Italian, is an ecclesial movement born in the heart of the Catholic Church. It began in 1943, in Trent, Northern Italy, during World War II. The movement is made up of persons of all ages, races, vocations, and now it is spread in more than 100 nations.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 713-869-1571 or e-mail houston.w@focolare.us.
