Lady Celts Face Last Regular Season Tournament

The Lady Celts Volleyball team ventured to Georgetown, Texas for their last regular season tournament to face four foes, two of which were being nationally ranked. On Friday, Oct. 29, the Lady Celts faced off against Concordia and UT-Tyler.
The Lady Celts got off to a slow start against Concordia. Hitting errors and poor passing led to an early 2-1 set deficit. The Lady Celts fought back to force a fifth set but came up short in the end. They were led offensively by senior middle blocker Mallory Wendel with 14 kills. Brittany downs recorded 24 digs.
Next up for the Lady Celts was UT-Tyler. This time the Lady Celts got off to a fast start with stellar play on the outside by Lauren Poe and Kinzie Van Voorst. Each finished the match with 11 kills. An overall well balanced attack led to the 18th win of the season for the Lady Celts.
Saturday presented a great test for the Lady Celts facing two nationally ranked teams in preparation for the A.I.I. Conference Tournament, which will be hosted in Houston Nov. 11-13. First up was Southwestern University. The Lady Celts battled hard to an early lead with strong attacking and great defense. In the end, the Lady Celts did not have enough to pull off the upset. Courtney Johnson led the offense with 7 kills. Kinzie Van Voorst led the defensive charge with 21 digs in three games for a stellar 7.0 digs per game average.
Next up was the No. 5 ranked Eastern University. With a balanced offensive attack, the Lady Celts hung in for a tough three set loss. Three Celts, Casey Mulryan, Kinzie Van Voorst and Lauren Poe, recorded 9 kills in the match. Eastern made crucial plays down the stretch of each game to pull out the win. Casey Mulryan was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Lady Celts will finish their regular season schedule with a match at Huston-Tillotson on Tuesday, Nov. 2. They will take the court again in post-season play at home when they host the A.I.I. Conference Tournament Nov 11-13. The Lady Celts are the two time defending champions.
