Ecologist Explores Lessons from Gulf Oil Spill
12/16/2010
As the Gulf Coast makes every effort to recover from oil spill, the University of St. Thomas will host ecologist Vic Hummert to speak about, “Lessons from the Gulf Oil Spill,” at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7. The lecture will be held on the UST campus, Ahern Room, Crooker Center, 3909 Graustark.
The event is presented by UST’s Rev. William J. Social Justice Institute and Maryknoll Houston First Friday Forum.
Hummert lives in Lafayette, La., and is one of the pioneers of the ecological movement. Hummert has been following the oil spill and its effect on the region’s wildlife, environment and economy. He will discuss the dependency on fossil fuels and the ever-pressing need to search out alternative sources of energy.
The Rev. William J. Young Social Justice Institute brings together academics, students, social justice activists, clergy, and parish ministers on a regular basis to project the implications of Catholic Social Teaching for the pressing political, social, and economic issues of the day.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available for $2 in the Moran Center, Graustark at West Alabama. For more information call Chris Lively at 713-525-3812.
