Nicole Casarez Receives Columbia Journalism Review Laurel
In the media storm that has followed the release of former death row inmate Anthony Graves, Nicole Casarez, Graves’ attorney and University of St. Thomas professor of communication, has received yet another accolade for her tireless efforts to help free an innocent man.

Casarez was featured in the Laurels section of the January/February issue of the Columbia Journalism Review. The Laurel was dedicated to Casarez and Texas Monthly senior editor Pamela Coloff, whose comprehensive article on Graves’ case raised public awareness and drew the attention of prosecutors.

Lauren Kirchner wrote in the Laurel article, “This Laurel goes to Nicole Casarez, who investigated this story over eight years, and to Pamela Colloff, who deftly translated the facts into a compelling narrative for a wider audience.”
Dr. Dominic Aquila, Vice President for Academic Affairs, commended Casarez for her work with Graves and the well-deserved recognition she received in such a prestigious publication.

“I stand in great admiration of the extraordinary work Nicole did on belhaf of Anthony Graves” Aquila said. “For professional journalists, getting a Laurel in the Columbia Journalism Review is a career goal.”

Casarez and Graves will share their story with the UST community at 7 p.m., Feb. 25 in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum. The event will be streamed live and available to view on the UST home page at
