Volleyball Rolls at Home with 2-0 Day
Lauren CurleyIn back-to-back home games, the University of St. Thomas women’s volleyball team defeated Dallas Christian College and St. Gregory’s University on Sept. 15. The Celts did not lose a set in either match in Jerabeck Gym.

The team earned its first victory of the day against Dallas Christian behind a strong offensive performance and competed for a season-high hitting percentage of .643. The offense was led by Lauren Curley, who had 11 kills hitting .667.

“Curley did a great job today getting up and ready to hit,” said Head Coach Kallie Noble. “She is really starting to become an offensive threat.”

Directing the Celts was senior setter Brittany Weiler, who led the team with 27 assists and eight service aces. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Biediger continued her strong start to the season with 10 kills in the match, and junior outside hitter Kirsten Kubicek had six kills.

UST put the finishing touches on a 2-0 weekend with a 3-0 win over St. Gregory’s, from Shawnee, Okla., 25-19, 25-14 and 25-18.

The Celts hit .278 holding the Cavaliers to a .151 hitting percentage. Kubicek’s 17 kills led all players, recording just four errors on 33 total attacks with a .394 percentage. She also recorded 10 digs for another double-double on the season. Weiler logged 35 assists, nine digs and four service aces. Shirley Paul led the Celts in digs with 21.

“I am very proud of the resiliency and confidence we showed in today’s matches,” Noble said. “The goal was to come out and focus on taking care of our side of the net, and I felt like we did that today.”

The Celts now shift its focus to next week as they begin conference play, on the road, against Texas College. The Celts will play at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21 in Tyler, Texas. To get updates about the team’s preparation and practice, follow the team on Twitter, @USTVolleyball12, or Like them on Facebook.
