The University of St. Thomas men’s soccer team
tied one of its best matches of the season against the reigning Red River Athletic Conference champions Huston-Tilloston University on Oct. 4 at the Houston Amateur Sports Park.
In the first half, both teams battled for possession and tried to break each other down. UST played solid defensive allowing only one shot on goal in the first half. UST had long spells of possession and tried to score, but the Celts went into the break tied 0-0.
The second half opened with a few more chances to score and hard tackles were made on both sides. In the 62nd
minute, freshman Chris Natera took a pass from sophomore Gio Andrade and chopped past a defender to blast a shot into the right corner giving UST the lead.
The Celts continued to put pressure on the visitors but were caught on a counter-attack in the 75th
minute. Huston-Tilloston took advantage of a Celt mistake and tied the game 1-1 ending regulation.
After two overtimes, neither team could break the tie, and the match ended 1-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Jason Taffet played well and made a few big saves to keep the Celts level. The result broke a six-match losing streak for the team.
