The University of St. Thomas Celts
women’s basketball team will play Red River Athletic Conference foe Bacone College at 5:30 p.m. tonight, Jan. 28, at home in Jerabeck Gym. The Celts previously lost a road game and won at home.
Slow Start Hurts the Celts in Shreveport
The team traveled to Louisiana on Jan. 24 for a contest against Louisiana State University-Shreveport. A slow start hurt the Celts, and they were behind the entire night before falling 85-69.
Head Coach Mike Ricks said the team's defense at the start of the game needed work.
"We have to have a better effort and play with more backbone,” Ricks said. “It doesn't matter what kind of offense or defense we run if we don't do it with an edge."
Stand-out players for the Celts included
Maghen Lormand with 27 points,
Hershiira Boone-Rodgers with 15 points, and
Amber Arceneaux-Francis had 13 points and 16 rebounds.
Celts Get the Win at Home
The Celts bounced back quickly upon returning home by defeating Langston University, 61-60, on Jan. 26.
"This was a character win for us," Ricks said. "We were down early, fought back, got down again and clawed our way back one more time at the end. They put in a great practice Friday and gave a mature effort tonight."
Gaby Guzman led four Celts in double figures with 16 points. Lormand added 14 points while Boone-Rodgers and
Emily Sebo added 13 points each.
