Miller Lecture Explores Popes' Thoughts on Culture
8/18/2010
The University of St. Thomas Annual Archbishop J. Michael Miller Lecture will present, “Culture in the Thought of John Paul II and Benedict XVI,” a lecture by Tracey Rowland, dean of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family Studies in Melbourne, Australia. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29 in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum.

Rowland has focused her previous scholarship on the interpretation of Vatican II and the
theology of culture. The relationship between the gospel and cultures has been described as nothing less than the “oceanic problem of the day.”

Pope John Paul II believed that western civilization is at a crossroads between a civilization of love and a culture of death, and in his Principles of Catholic Theology, Joseph Ratzinger (now Benedict XVI) described the severest crisis in twentieth century theology, as “understanding the mediation of history in the realm of ontology.” Professor Rowland’s Miller Lecture will address these themes in the thought of the two pontiffs.

This lecture made possible through the generosity of the John W. and Alida M. Considine Foundation. The event is sponsored by the UST Catholic Studies Program.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. For more information, contact Sr. Paula Jean Miller, FSE at 713-525-6989.
