Meza Family Values Annual Weekend
11/8/2012

Photo: Angie Meza and familyRooted in the Catholic tradition, the Meza family makes it a priority to attend the University of St. Thomas Family Weekend every year. Angie Meza, a junior general studies major studying Spanish and theology, attended the event on Oct. 20 with her parents, two sisters and two nieces.

An annual family affair, the Mezas take the trip from Southeast Houston and look forward to applauding Angie’s collegiate life at St. Thomas.

“My family is very proud of me for choosing to come to UST,” Angie said. “UST has become my home away from home. It is important for my parents to come to UST and feel safe and comfortable about me being on campus all the time. I feel that Family Weekend is a great way to show them my gratitude for always supporting me in my college career.”

The Mezas attended St. Augustine’s Birthday Celebration with attractions such as face painting, carnival games, food, prizes and more. The Rev. Mike Buentello, CSB, chaplain and director of Campus Ministry, smoked a pig on the Campus Life Mall for all the hungry guests. The Mezas ate carnival foods, played games and enjoyed quality time, along with other UST families throughout the afternoon.

The family also cheered on the UST volleyball team on Saturday. At this game, the team had a 3-1 win against University of the Southwest. Stephanie Biediger, a UST senior outside hitter, achieved a career milestone of 1,000 kills.

Angie’s father, Benito Meza, a deacon in the Church for 10 years, is confident in UST’s mission and appreciates events like Family Weekend that work to keep families focused on the benefits of higher education.

“It was important for me to take part in the activities as a family and show support to the institution we have come to know and love," Benito said.

Over the course of the weekend, Oct. 19-21, about 50 families attended. In addition to St. Augustine’s birthday party, hosted by Residence Life, and sports events, many families attended the Dean’s Reception on Friday night in Link-Lee Mansion, hosted by the Office of Alumni Relations. Also, Dr. John Story, associate professor of management and marketing in the Cameron School of Business, gave a Faculty Presentation on how faculty research enhances student learning. The presentation included a welcome from University President Dr. Robert Ivany.

Matt Prasifka, assistant vice president of Campus Life, said he looks forward to more families attending in the future.

“I thought the weekend went very well,” Prasifka said. “Families really seemed to enjoy visiting with the deans and faculty members that were in attendance at the Dean’s Reception on Friday night. All events ran smoothly and everyone seemed to be having a good time.”
