Menís Basketball Ranked 3rd in RRAC

UST Men's BasketballThe University of St. Thomas men’s basketball team improved its overall record to 17-5 this season with a 75-73 nail-biter over Texas Wesleyan University on Feb. 4.

The Rams from TWU came roaring back from a 49-38 deficit to take a 1-point lead with 2:30 left in the game. Senior Caleb Williams answered with a 12-foot jumper to put St. Thomas back up for good. TWU’s Mo Weathers missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have won the game for the Rams.

Senior point guard Travis Lampley led the Celts in scoring with 21 points. For the third straight game, St. Thomas had five guys in double figures. Williams chipped in 16 points, and Henoc Jean had double figures for the second straight game with 12. 

Texas Wesleyan was led by Oscar Griffin, who had 23 after scoring 20 in the first half. Weathers ended the night with 21 points and four assists.

UST was still going strong after they crushed the University of the Southwest 86-65 on Feb. 2 at home in Jerabeck Gym. UST played this game in support of the Blue Cure Foundation, which strives to promote awareness about prostate cancer and encourage prevention through diet and lifestyle habits.

The Mustangs from New Mexico did not make it easy on UST as they jumped out to an early 12-point lead at 29-17. The Mustangs finished the first half with a 39-35 lead.

Southwest immediately extended its halftime lead to 10 before the Celts made a run. St. Thomas outscored USW 51-20 the rest of the way.

Lampley, the National Association for Intercollegiate Atheltics assist leader, set a new career high with 17 assists in this game. Currently, Lampley is averaging more than nine assists per game.

Mentioned earlier, five Celts were in double figures including junior Bryan Kaase leading the way with 19. Jean also set a personal best with 15 points while Adrian Morales had 15 for the second straight game.

St. Thomas is now 12-4 and in third place in the Red River Athletic Conference. UST will play Our Lady of the Lake University at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 at home. Tickets are $3 and free for children 12 and under.
