UST, UH Residence Life Make Holiday Cards for Soldiers
12/13/2010
Residence Life students at the University of St. Thomas and University of Houston collaborated on a service project to make holiday cards for the troops in Iraq on Dec. 2 at a UH residence hall, Cougar Village. The group made more than 100 Christmas cards for active soldiers.
Guinan resident assistant Brandi English and UH resident assistant Catherine Brda, met during a joint university RA fall training, and the pair brainstormed about how to host a service project that would allow both school’s students to socialize while giving back to the community.
The group, which included both UST and UH resident assistants and about 30 other students, was accompanied by UST alumnus John Bradley. UST Residence Life plans to host another collaborative service project with UH on the UST campus in the spring semester.
“The simple act of making Christmas cards for active soldiers was our way of showing our troops that we are thinking of them while they are away from their families during the holiday season,” English said. “We wanted to show how much we appreciate them for their dedication and commitment. The Christmas cards will be delivered to Brda's brother, who is in the Marines and will be spending the holiday home this year.”
“This service project was very special to me. I come from a family that served in the military, particularly my grandfather, a WWII veteran and cousin who currently serves in the Navy,” English said.
