The University of St. Thomas Music Department, Center for International Studies and Consulate General of Argentina invite you to “A Night of Tangos: The Jorge Retamoza Trio” at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 in Cullen Hall.

 

A group shaped by Argentine musicians, which, taking to the tango as the first expression, incorporates genres of jazz and contemporary music. The result is a music style called "post-Piazzolla" or “New Tango," a continuation of the work begun by Astor Piazzolla. The repertoire is mainly original music, some arrangements of tunes by Piazzolla and Rovira and a few tango standards that the group uses as vehicles for improvisation.

 

Dr. Glenn Garrido, chair of Music, said the Retamoza Trio is coming directly from Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the support of the Argentinean Government through The Consulate of Argentina in Houston.

 

“This collaboration will bring together the Argentinean people living in Texas, the music audience that regularly attends our performances and the international community related to or served by UST International Studies,” Garrido said.     

 

The group plays regularly in Argentina and South America, appearing in festivals of tango and jazz year round. Festivals include Mar del Jazz, Jazz y Otras Músicas, Jóven Guardia del Tango, Tango del Siglo 21, Tango 06, Buenos Aires Festival de Tango, in the National Library Hall and TV shows. They have also toured Spain in Barcelona, Reus, Coruña, Santiago, Lugo, Vigo, Pontevedra and Madrid.

 

Garrido also said the group just returned from a successful tour in Europe.
