Aspiring Principals Excel in UST MBA
3/6/2013

Logo: Beta Gamma SigmaSix members of the inaugural Master of Business Administration cohort for teachers were accepted into the International Honor Society of Beta Gamma Sigma, and one will attend a national conference.

The cohort is the product of the collaboration between the University of St. Thomas Cameron School of Business and Houston Independent School District, in which aspiring principals study for an MBA with a concentration in educational administration.

The students inducted into BGS were Jonathan Alaniz, Angela Crowley, Juan Ramirez, Carolos Rodriguez and Quang Tran. This achievement is evidence of the rigorous HISD selection process developed for entrance into district-sponsored university Logo: Beta Gamma Sigmaleadership programs.

Election to lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest honor a business student anywhere in the world can receive in an undergraduate or master’s program at a school accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International.

Students, based on high academic achievement, and tenured business school faculty members are the only ones eligible for membership in the society. With more than 580,000 members worldwide, the society’s membership comprises the brightest and best of the world’s business leaders. Cameron was awarded as a Premier Chapter for the 2011-2012 year by BGS.

Also benefitting from the UST/HISD partnership is Elsa Mascardo, a UST MBA cohort member and teacher specialist at J. P. Henderson Elementary in HISD. She was selected for the Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teaching and Teachers Conference hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in San Francisco, Calif.

The 2013 ECET2 National Convening has two primary goals. The first is to increase teachers’ capacity for understanding and implementing the instructional shifts required to teach the CCSS content, laying the groundwork for a shared understanding of effective practice. The second is to support and strengthen teachers’ capacity to be leaders, both within their schools and beyond, with specific support for engaging in collaborative, teacher-to-teacher feedback.

Dean of the School of Education Dr. Nora Hutto said it is a privilege to work with HISD on the program.

“They have been collaborative and supportive in our many partnership efforts,” she said. “We work together for the betterment of teaching and learning for all students.”
