Pinocchio Offers Adults Italian Tale
3/8/2013
Photo: PinocchioTo commemorate the Year of the Italian Culture in the United States, the University of St. Thomas will partner with the Italian Cultural and Community Center, Cathy and Giorgio Borlenghi of Hotel Ganduca, Fabrizio Nava and the Consul General of Italy to host a performance of “Pinocchio: Storia di un Burattino.” The performance will take place at 7 p.m. on March 21 in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum.

“Pinocchio: Storia di un Burattino,”or “Pinocchio: Story of a Puppet,” is based on Carlo Collodi’s famous fairytale and retells the story of Geppetto and his desire for a son, revealing the beauty and truth behind the famous puppet. Collodi’s story, many times considered a children’s tale, is a narration about the memory of a nation fighting for independence, with the aim to provide food for thought, Collodi said.

Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce said Pinocchio is a story where the whole humanity is inscribed on a piece of wood.
“It includes the relationship between freedom and obedience, between father and son,” Croce said. “The narration is full of humor and deeply emotional, with philosophical taste.”

The performance, a monologue directed and performed by the celebrated Italian actor Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, will be performed in Italian with English subtitles. The choreographic work, by Italian choreographer Michela Lucenti, plays an important role in the interpretation of Geppetto, Jiminy Cricket and the Fairy by Flory.

Pinocchio’s stop at St. Thomas is part of the U.S. tour that began in Los Angeles earlier this year and is best suited for an adult audience. Admission is free and Pinocchio will be presented on campus for one performance only.
