UST Grad to Intern with State Representative

All you have to do is look at their faces and you know – there is no denying the family resemblance between Ashley, Mychal and Brandi English. Appearance and genetics aside, their University of St. Thomas education is yet another common thread that links the three siblings.

After Ashley graduated in 2007 followed by Mychal in 2009, Brandi jokes that her family saved the best for last. Earning a dual degree in political science and communication, English is among the 328 undergraduates and 350 graduate students who will participate in the 61st commencement ceremony on May 14 at Reliant Arena. After graduation, she will intern with State Representative Jessica Farrar.

From elementary through high school, English said she was always known as Ashley and Mychal’s younger sister. When the time came to choose a college, she was reluctant to continue that trend by attending UST with her brother and sister.  Instead of living in her siblings’ shadow, she learned how to “be Brandi,” how to become a leader, and how make the UST experience her own.

“At UST, Ashley and Mychal set the bar, and I either had to exceed or maintain their level of success,” she said. “The more I got involved on campus, the more people knew me for me. The curriculum at UST really helped me develop as a person and I have grown in so many other ways than just intellectually. Theology classes gave me greater insight into my faith and the philosophy classes taught me about my soul. I was truly able to find myself at St. Thomas.”

While at UST, English was a resident assistant and worked in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. She was active in Student Government Association, Black Student Union, Presidential Ambassadors, Student Activities Board, Campus Programming Committee, Residence Council and Judicial Board.

English parlayed her strength in communication and interest in politics to pursue her goal to become a political campaign communication director. English said she gained the knowledge and practical skills at UST that will prepare her to achieve that goal.

“UST students graduate with practical experience, not just theories,” English said. “Our classes are so small and intimate that students are able to go out in the real world and report back to class what they learned in their internships and volunteer jobs.”

English said she was able to land many of her internships courtesy of faculty connections at UST. In addition to her studies and numerous campus commitments, English was promoted to staff writer after being an editorial intern at JMG Magazine and worked as a marketing and development intern with Catholic Charities. She also traveled to Austin to speak with legislators to advocate for the Texas Equalization Grant and volunteered with Sheila Jackson Lee’s 18th District Congressional Campaign and Gene Locke’s 2010 Houston Mayoral campaign.
