UST Joins Red River Athletic Conference
The University of St. Thomas Athletic Department has accepted an invitation to become the newest member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Red River Conference. The Celts will compete for conference championships during the 2011-2012 school year in volleyball, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf.
The Red River Conference is a 15-member conference that hosts championships in 13 sports. Member universities include Bacone College, Huston-Tillotson University, Jarvis Christian College, Langston University, Louisiana State University-Shreveport, Northwood University, Our Lady of the Lake University, Paul Quinn College, Southwest Assemblies of God, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan University, University of Texas-Brownsville, University of the Southwest and Wiley College.
“The University of St. Thomas is pleased to join the Red River Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics,” UST President Dr. Robert Ivany said. “NAIA stresses the importance of developing Champions of Character and student-athletes who value a holistic education. We look forward to a challenging year of competition in the Red River Conference.”
St. Thomas’s young but growing athletic department makes the move to the Red River Conference after competing in the Association of Independent Institutions Conference for five years. Women’s basketball along with men’s and women’s golf will compete in their inaugural year in the 2011-2012 season.
“This is a great step in the growth of our athletic department,” said Athletic Director Todd Smith. “The Red River Athletic Conference will provide us with many opportunities necessary in the development of athletics at UST. We now have a chance to build rivalries with the other NAIA schools in Texas and Oklahoma. The Red River Conference will help in scheduling, travel and budget.”
