UST Celebrates Support for Future Nursing School
9/20/2010
As the University of St. Thomas focuses on the future of nursing education, supporters of the School of Nursing kept their eyes on the horizon at the “View from Above Progressive Dinner,” held on Sept. 17 at 2727 Kirby High-rise.

Guests mingled and dined against the backdrop of stunning views of the city, courtesy of high-rise residents and hosts, Margo Geddie, Judy and Darby Seré and Trini Mendenhall Sosa and Frank Sosa. The event culminated with an elegant dinner on the seventh floor Sunset Room.

This underwriters’ event celebrated the support given for the University’s Founders Nursing Gala to be held at Tony’s Restaurant on Nov. 18. Sheridan Williams is chairing the gala that honors the John S. Dunn Research Foundation. The University is raising $2 million for the Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza Endowed Chair in Nursing. Archbishop Fiorenza’s deep admiration and respect for the nursing profession began when he served as chaplain for St. Joseph Hospital.

At Friday night’s progressive dinner, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett spoke of Houston’s expansion, which carries the need for qualified nurses.

The University of St. Thomas has begun the initial planning to reopen the School of Nursing to address the growing shortage of nurses nationwide. The University expects to begin offering a bachelor of science in nursing and enrolling the first class of nursing students by 2012.

The School of Nursing at the University of St. Thomas will be firmly rooted in the spiritual values and philosophy of the University, emphasizing the care for the whole person – body mind and spirit. The nursing school will significantly benefit the Houston community and the Texas Medical Center by educating exemplary nurses and the nursing leaders. The School of Nursing will help relieve today’s critical nursing shortage by offering its students increasingly essential bachelor of science degrees in nursing. Patient-centered principles instilled at St. Thomas will guide nursing graduates in their nursing careers and throughout their lives.

Among the 75 guests entertained by the UST Pop Singers including UST music major Ariel Deshotel were Judy and Darby Seré, Margo Geddie, Trini Mendenhall Sosa, Beth and Dr. Cristo Papasakelariou, Dr. John Marcellus, Archbishop Fiorenza, John Eddie and Sheridan Williams, Odis Peavy and Kathy Peavy Bailey, Charlotte and Dr. Stratton Hill, Margaret Alkek Williams, Raye White, Shirley and Jim Dannenbaum, Franco Valobra, David Lopez and Judge Ed Emmett.
