UST School of Nursing Partners with AORN’s Periop 101 Program
4/17/2012
Graphic: UST StarThe University of St. Thomas School of Nursing has partnered with the American Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) for a pilot program granting UST nursing students access to Periop 101 online learning modules. This pilot program will prepare students for perioperative clinical rotations in the Houston Country Hospital District. The Periop 101 course has been used exclusively for registered nurses moving into perioperative settings up to this point. This pilot program represents the first time that AORN has provided access to Periop 101 modules to nursing students. AORN CEO and Executive Director Linda Groah announced the UST/AORN pilot project to the membership at the national AORN Congress on March 28, 2012.

AORN’s eight Periop 101 modules provide the didactic education needed to prepare registered nurses for work in the perioperative environment. The course topics include: Introduction to Perioperative Nursing; The Surgical Environment; Aseptic Technique; Perioperative Assessment; Safety in the Surgical Suite; Scrubbing, Gowning and Gloving; Positioning the Patient; and Perianethesia Nursing. The content is written by expert perioperative nurse-authors, peer-reviewed and continuously updated to reflect the latest AORN Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.

In addition to developing this partnership, the UST School of Nursing is in the process of educating nurse preceptors who will assist students with clinical learning. The nurse preceptors are being prepared for their role as clinical teachers and mentors through participation in a Nurse Preceptor Education Course funded by a grant from the Baxter Trust. Preceptors will be selected to work with students in four clinical courses to be offered in collaboration with the Harris Country Hospital District.

The AORN pilot program and nurse preceptor training has been made available through collaboration between the UST School of Nursing and the Harris County Hospital District Nursing Services, which has supported the development of the UST nursing program from the outset. Both partners are committed to an evidence-based approach to clinical problem-solving and a patient-centered approach to care practices.
