Archbishop Fiorenza Lecture Focuses on Vatican II
9/21/2012
Photo: Dr John BorelliThe University of St. Thomas Center for Faith and Culture will host the annual Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza Lecture with Dr. John Borelli, research fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 3 in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum Blvd. Borelli will speak about “Understanding and Interpreting Vatican II and the Promotion of Dialogue.”

Beginning with John O’Malley’s analysis of Vatican II, Borelli will explore the stated goals of Pope John XXIII, how Pope Paul VI adopted and embellished those goals and how the secretariat for Christian Unity promoted those goals in its work. The work produced three decrees on ecumenism, interreligious dialogue and religious liberty, and it contributed to the outcome of the decree on revelation.

Borelli will note particular changes in Catholic-Jewish and Catholic-Muslim relations with the Council. He will detail how these changes have unfolded, how Catholics view relations from a perspective 50 years later and draw conclusions on what remains to be done.

Borelli is the special assistant for Interreligious Initiatives to Georgetown University’s president. He works on several university projects related to Catholic identity, the university’s Jesuit heritage, and teaches courses on dialogue and comparative theology. He also serves as national coordinator for interreligious dialogue for the U.S. Jesuit Conference.

For more than 19 years, the Center for Faith and Culture has offered conferences, symposia, interreligious dialogue and parish outreach programs, and now a Master of Arts in Faith and Culture — all dedicated to facilitating a dialogue between faith and the American way of life and the formation of faithful citizens.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Greg Arbogast at 713-942-5066 or cfc@stthom.edu.
