Go Green with USTís St. Patrickís Day

Graphic: St. Patrick Glass People across the world will dress in green and don their shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day. The William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day like the Irish at 10:30 a.m. on March 15.

Join the Center for a full day of Irish tradition, including an Irish feast of smoked salmon, Irish soda bread, scrambled eggs and more.

The festivities begin with Mass in the Chapel of St. Basil, celebrated by Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Fiorenza. Dr. Brady Knapp, of the UST Music Department, will serve as the musical director, and members of the University Singers will participate in the liturgical music.

Lori Gallagher, J.D., director of the Center, anticipates a great Irish celebration.

“After Mass, we’ll delight in a traditional Irish breakfast while enjoying one another’s company and lovely music by harpist Laurie Meister,” she said.

The brunch is free to UST faculty, staff and students, as well as all religious and all clergy in the community. All attendees must RSVP for breakfast by March 7 to Irish Studies at 713-525-3592 or

Advance tickets are $25 and checks can be delivered to the Center, 4206 Yoakum Blvd., with attention to Lori Gallagher and made payable to University of St. Thomas. Tickets are $30 at the door, and all proceeds will benefit the Center.

Gallagher invites everyone to participate in walking in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, at noon on March 16, with the Center and the students in the UST Irish Club. Arrive at 11 a.m. at the Minute Maid Clock Tower to join the line. Others are welcome to cheer them on from the side.

There also is a St. Patrick's Day Parade at 2 p.m. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, on FM 1960.
