Pre-Party Marks Start to Irish Gala

Photo: Irish Studies Underwriting inside photoThe 2012 Annual Irish Gala kicked off with an Underwriter Party, hosted by co-chairs Susan and Jim Power, on Sept. 27.  The event, sponsored by the University of St. Thomas William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies, brought more than 70 people together to meet and greet event honorees Mary Elizabeth Donovan, Tom Horan and Sister Mary Brendan O’Donnell, C.V.I.  The event celebrated the upcoming Gala on Nov. 9.

Guests were treated to music from harpist Therese Honey, from the group Wyndnwyre, and flutist Larry Mallette and fiddler Diehl Moran from the band The Jig is Up!.  Both groups will be performing at the Gala.

Gala co-chairs Mills and Steve Toomey were joined by Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza, University President Dr. Robert Ivany and his wife Marianne, members of the Center Advisory Board and 2012 Gala Underwriters.  

The guests included the Rev. Brendan Cahill, the Rev. Mike Buentello, CSB, UST Campus Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry, the Rev. Ted Baenziger, CSB, and the UST Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist: Sister Mary Roberta Connors, Sister Veronica Schuler, and Sister Paula Jean Miller.
 
The Gala will be at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at The Houstonian Hotel, 111 North Post Oak Ln. RSVP to 713-525-3592 by Nov. 1. The Gala benefits the Flynn Center for Irish Studies and raises money for UST Ireland and Northern Ireland study abroad scholarships. Click here to purchase tickets.

Center for Irish Studies
The William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies at the University of St. Thomas in Houston is the only Irish Studies academic program in the Southwest. The Center serves as a focal point for the study and appreciation of Irish and Northern Irish history, literature, politics, law, language, music, art, drama, culture and society.
