William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies Celebrates New Residence, Ninth Anniversary

Graphic: The William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies More than 100 guests attended the official opening of the new residence of the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies and the celebration of the ninth anniversary of its inauguration on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

The festivities included a tour of the beautiful house built in 1926, a ribbon-cutting by guest of honor, Irish Consul General Aidan Cronin, and entertainment by harpist Laurie Meister. Directed by Lori Gallagher JD, the Center is now located at 4206 Yoakum Blvd.

Dignitaries joining Consul General Cronin were Honorary Consul General of Ireland and Center founder John B. Kane, British Consul General Andrew Millar, Marianne and Dr. Robert Ivany, University President, William J. Flynn, Chairman Emeritus of Mutual of America Insurance Company, Norma and Dr. Joseph McFadden, University President Emeritus and Professor of Irish and American History, Patrick Sharkey, President of The Irish Society, Kate and Bob Signorelli, 2011 Irish Gala Chairs, and Center Advisory Board Members John Barnes, Delia Cowles, Dr. Denis Headon, Dr. Pat Herlihy, Janet Gilmore, Jes Hagale, Mary Koks, Jill Metzger, Kathleen Miggins, Susan Power, Mills Toomey and Michele Malloy, who also serves as Chair of the University Board of Directors.

The William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies at the University of St. Thomas in Houston is the only Irish Studies academic program in the Southwest. The Center serves as a focal point for the study and appreciation of Irish and Northern Irish history, literature, politics, law, language, music, art, drama, culture and society.
